A Letter to our Readers

Dear Readers,

The monsoon has retreated and sunny skies are here again.
With the coming of better weather, our tourist season begins.

The main story of this issue of the Enchanting Myanmar travel magazine brings to the attention of travelers the fascinating festivals of the Shan State; Phaung Daw 00 Festival, the Taunggyi Hot-Air Balloon Competition and the Parade of Lights Festival held annually atTaunggyi in the months of october and November. Many articles had been written on the Phaung Daw 00 Festival but little of the remaining two, which are no less popular and enchanting. And we hope our efforts would make them get better publicity in the future.

Inwa and Amarapura were once very prominent cities of the past in Myanmar history. Now an article by Ma Thanegi explains why. In the same article the hills of Sagaing are featured. These hills dotted with numerous pagodas, monasteries and nunneries are considered a religious sanctuary by the Buddhists.

For trekking enthusiasts, there is an article on the interesting places to go visiting around Kyaing Tong. An additional bonus for these trekkers would be the opportunity to see the simple village folks in these ethnic villages, untouched yet by the hubbub of the 21 st century.

Toddy palms are abundant allover the country. Toddy is also in our daily life. It has many uses; toddy sugar, construction materials and last but not least, is the toddy juice, either sweet or fermented and consume as a sweet drink. The versatile usages of the toddy palm are also described in an interesting article written by Yin Wyn.

And a new section is introduced starting from this issue. Author Aung Thinn's heartwarming short story on a village teacher's dedication is this issue's choice. We hope we shall be able to introduce other famous Myanmar authors to the international readers in the coming issues.

Finally we wish our readers an auspicious Thadingyut Light Festival and hope you will find this latest issue of Enchanting Myanmar as interesting as the previous ones.
