Birders' Delight

A rare bird thought to be on the brink of extinction and listed as critically endangered by the IUCN was recently re-discovered by a group of Myanmar and foreign bird enthusiasts in the southern Tanintharyi regions of Myanmar. This is the Gurney's Pitta (Pitta gurneyi), a small bird with multi-coloured plummage inhabiting the low-lands forest sites, which was last sighted in Myanmar in 1914. The lastest discovered was at four sites with 10-12 pairs at each site but it is estimated that there could be more of these birds in more remote areas. It is hoped that this latest find could be a great assistance in developing conservation actions for these species. We hope to bring you full details of this discovery in later issues of Enchanting Myanamar.
